The birth of fetish: Thanks, papa Walt
I recently read that Disney has found yet another way in which to cash in on their famous cartoon characters like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella by creating a line of 34 wedding gowns. I had no idea that the company even catered to brides and I subsequently wondered if they also made groom outfits. However, I’m not sure a groom dressed as one of the seven dwarves or Dingus McDuck would be all that inspiring or sexy at least, that is, for some people.
However, I got to thinking that this tidbit of old news must drive some fetishists wild with excitement. While many of us think of fetishes as desire and fantasy related to breasts, bondage, feet, fat or femdom, there’s a whole group of individuals where the prospect of a Cinderella gown and literal fairy tale wedding would be the ultimate dream come true. After all, fetishes arise in childhood and since television and Disney movies are often surrogate parents, it makes sense that there are those of us who might develop a sexual obsession for various pop culture characters. So what kinds of fetishes revolve around such concepts?
Furries, furverts and fursuiters are devoted to toon characters like Mickey Mouse, although their fantasies extend beyond the magical world of Disney. Their main interest is combining animal and human characteristics and they often meet at conferences or act out their fantasies on FurryMUCK, which is a virtual environment. There are those into speculative S/M which combines BDSM and sci-fi and which can be read in anthologies like Circlet Press’ Fetish Fantastic. The internet has a wealth of slash fiction, homoerotic narratives written around relationships between fictional characters like Captain Kirk/Spock or ObiWan/QuiGon, that is easily acquired and quite fun to read IMO.
Getting back to it though, it took me off guard to learn about Disney’s devotion to brides and honeymoons and the more I think, the more it seems as if the company promotes and markets adult fandom with such divisions than it advertises its products. In essence, much as Warner Brother’s delivered us the cross-dressing castrato, Bugs Bunny and Hanna-Barbera delivered us horny, gang banging This entry was posted on Friday, May 18th, 2007 at 8:38 am and is filed under Fetish Lifestyle.
